China Temporary Tariff Rollback Triggers Restocking Rush for U.S. Businesses

(MENAFN) American retailers and manufacturers quickly scrambled to place new orders with Chinese suppliers after the United States and China announced a temporary rollback of reciprocal tariffs, creating a 90-day window to restock their dwindling inventories.

Jay Foreman, CEO of Florida-based toy company Basic Fun, shared his immediate reaction: "We're starting to move everything," revealing he woke up at 4 a.m. Monday local time (1100 GMT) upon hearing about the tariff cut.

Foreman added, "We have to call trucking companies in China to schedule pickups at the factories. And we have to book space on these container ships now," in remarks to a news outlet.

The announcement came Monday following weekend talks between the world's two largest economies, prompting swift action from U.S. businesses eager to secure goods before the three-month suspension ends.

Paul Brashier, vice president of global supply chain at ITS Logistics, told a news agency on Tuesday, "I have clients with thousands of containers preloaded in China that are ready to come in," and predicted, "Over the next four to six weeks, we expect a surge of containers."

Leading retailers such as Walmart and Target, which had paused or scaled back orders from Chinese factories amid tariff uncertainties, have resumed active engagement with suppliers.

Allen Yan, who operates factories in eastern China producing swimming pool supplies, informed a media source that Target resumed previously halted shipments almost immediately after hearing about the tariff cut.

This agreement provided relief for American companies that had halted ordering due to the steep 145-percent tariffs imposed by the Trump administration in April.
