Sudanese Army, Allied Forces Reclaim Key City in South Kordofan

(MENAFN) A coalition aligned with the Sudanese military, known as the Joint Forces, declared on Friday that they had successfully reclaimed the crucial town of Al-Dabiabat in South Kordofan after intense confrontations with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

In an official statement, the Joint Forces — a group of factions that signed the 2020 Juba Peace Agreement and are currently fighting alongside the national army — announced “the liberation of the strategic city of Al-Dabiabat in the Kordofan region from the hands of the RSF militias.”

Al-Dabiabat, positioned approximately 186 kilometers (116 miles) from the capital of South Kordofan, Kadugli, serves as an essential transportation and logistical hub linking South Kordofan, North Kordofan, and East Darfur. Regaining this location also opens the possibility of lifting the encirclement of Deling, the second-largest city in South Kordofan.

The announcement highlighted that this victory stemmed from “the precise, coordinated military operations conducted jointly with the Sudanese army, inflicting heavy enemy losses in personnel and equipment.”

Sudanese military personnel shared video clips on various social media platforms, showcasing their forces entering Al-Dabiabat and proclaiming the RSF’s retreat.

As of now, the RSF has not released any public statements in response to the military's progress and claims of territorial gains.

The armed conflict between the RSF and the Sudanese army erupted in April 2023, plunging the country into widespread chaos. The fighting has led to the deaths of thousands and caused an enormous humanitarian disaster.

Figures from the United Nations and regional officials estimate that over 20,000 people have lost their lives and roughly 15 million have been forced to flee their homes. However, recent findings by academic researchers in the United States suggest that the true death toll could be closer to 130,000.
