Agreement achieved to conduct Putin-Trump meeting in ‘coming days’
“At the suggestion of the American side, we reached a preliminary agreement for a high-level bilateral meeting soon,” said Yuri Ushakov, adding that both sides have started preparations and have tentatively settled on a venue, with details to be revealed later.
Ushakov noted that next week is being considered as a possible date, though final arrangements depend on how quickly preparations can be completed. His comments came a day after Trump said there is a “good chance” of meeting his Russian counterpart “soon.”
On Wednesday, US special envoy Steve Witkoff met with Putin in Moscow, just ahead of Trump’s deadline for Russia to agree to a Ukraine ceasefire or face new sanctions. Ushakov said Witkoff raised the idea of a trilateral meeting involving Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, but the suggestion was left without discussion as Moscow prefers to focus on ensuring a productive bilateral summit with Trump.
If held, it would be the first in-person meeting between the Russian and US presidents since Putin met then-President Joe Biden in Geneva in June 2021.
