NATO Official Says Alliance Has No Mechanism to Expel Members
As stated by reports, the official said in a written response that “NATO’s founding (Washington) Treaty does not foresee any provision for suspension of membership or expulsion,” addressing speculation about possible internal discussions within the alliance.
The comments followed reports referencing an alleged US official claim that an internal Pentagon communication outlined potential steps against allies perceived as not supporting certain US military operations, including proposals that mentioned Spain.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez dismissed the reports, emphasizing that Madrid bases its decisions on formal government positions rather than internal communications. Speaking ahead of an informal EU leaders’ meeting in the Greek Cypriot administration, he said, “We don’t work with emails, we work with official documents and positions of the US government.”
He added that Spain remains committed to cooperation with allies while adhering to international law. “Spain’s position is clear: full cooperation with allies, but always within the framework of international law,” Sanchez said.
According to reports, Spain has declined to allow the use of its military bases or airspace for operations against Iran, a position that has drawn criticism from US President Donald Trump.
Trump has repeatedly argued that NATO allies should increase their contributions to collective defense and has at times suggested reconsidering the extent of US commitments to the alliance.
