Azerbaijan Denounces Turkish Flag Burning Incident in Armenia’s Capital
In its response, Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry characterized the act as deeply troubling, urging broader international condemnation. “Such acts, which are a clear manifestation of a revanchist and ethnic hatred-based fascist mindset in Armenia, should be condemned and prevented at the international level,” it said.
Officials in Baku argued that the Armenian government bore responsibility for failing to stop the incident, stressing that stronger security precautions should have been in place. The ministry described the act as part of a broader pattern driven by hostility rooted in ethnic animosity. It further criticized any justification of such behavior under civil liberties, stating: “It is completely unacceptable to turn a blind eye to such unacceptable acts under the pretext of democratic norms, freedom of assembly, and freedom of expression.”
Meanwhile, Armenia’s leadership also reacted to the event. According to reports, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan denounced the flag burning, labeling it as a provocative move that could escalate tensions. His press secretary, Nazeli Baghdasaryan, conveyed his stance, emphasizing that the act was both irresponsible and unjustifiable, particularly when directed at the symbol of a recognized neighboring state.
The episode unfolds at a sensitive time, as both Armenia and Türkiye continue efforts aimed at improving and normalizing diplomatic ties.
